Re: Historic Landmark Status, Ovens Auditorium and Cricket Arena

Dear Dan:

At its October meeting, the Board of Directors of the Auditorium‑Coliseum‑Convention Center Authority discussed the issue of Historic Landmark Status for Ovens Auditorium and Cricket Arena. The Authority would like to convey the following concerning the matter to the Historic Landmarks Commission:

The Authority agrees with the idea that the Auditorium and Arena are facilities of historic significance to the Charlotte community.

Both the Auditorium and Arena have a bright future in our community. The number of events hosted by each facility and the number of patrons attending those events continues to grow on an annual basis.

The Authority has been a good steward of these facilities over the 46 years the Auditorium and Arena have been in operation. The Authority anticipates continuing this level of stewardship into the future.

Historic Landmark Status for the Auditorium and Arena is not necessary to maintain the character or significance of the facilities.

The Authority would like to develop an informal relationship with the Historic Landmarks Commission for the purpose of consulting on improvements that may effect the appearance of either facility.

Dan thanks for your patience for the time it took for the Authority reach a position on this issue. Please let me know when the Historic Landmarks Commission will next discuss the matter. I would like to attend the meeting to hear the discussion and answer any questions the board may have concerning the Authority's position. If you have any questions, please call.

Sincerely,

Michael E. Crum
