About the Authors Walter R.
Turner, who grew up in Winston-Salem, is historian at the North Carolina
Transportation Museum in Spencer, N.C. He earned degrees from Methodist
College in Fayetteville and the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill. His articles on transportation topics have appeared in Our State,
Business North Carolina, and the American Aviation Historical
Society Journal. Turner's book on the history of the North Carolina
Department of Transportation will be published in spring 2003.
Karl Campbell is an
Assistant Professor of History at Appalachian State University. He
specializes in American political history and North Carolina history, with a
primary research focus on Watergate and Senator Sam Ervin. He is a recent
recipient of the Robert D.W. Connor Award presented by the North Carolina
Historical Review.
Penelope
Karagounis is a graduate student in the Department of Geography at the
University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Her research interests are social
geography and urban planning.
