Mr. Dan Morrill Consulting Director Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission 2100 Randolph Road Charlotte, North Carolina 28207

Re: Historic Landmark Status, Ovens Auditorium and Cricket Arena

Dear Dan:

The Board of Directors of the Charlotte Auditorium-Coliseum-Convention Center Authority opposes Historic Landmark Status for Ovens Auditorium and Cricket Arena.

Ovens Auditorium and Cricket Arena are active, working facilities that have served the public for nearly 50 years. Today, these facilities host over 300 events per year. The Authority sees a bright future for both buildings. To that end, the Authority needs the flexibility to improve the facilities to meet the changes in the live sports and entertainment industry.

The Board recognizes and agrees with the idea that both the Auditorium and Arena are facilities of historical significance to the City of Charlotte. However, there is great concern on the part of the Board that Historic Landmark Status for the interior or exterior of the Auditorium and Arena would constrain the Authority's ability to make improvements in a timely and efficient manner.

Dan, thank you for the time and effort you have spent on exploring this matter. In particular, I appreciate the time you have spent with me to educate me on the mission and activities of the Historic Landmarks Commission. Should you have any questions concern the Authority's position, please contact me directly.

Sincerely,

Michael E. Crum

Managing Director
