There are two types of applications for Certificates of Appropriateness.  Both can be filed electronically.  Minor Works Certificate of Appropriateness Applications can be processed quickly, usually within three or four days.  They cover incidental changes, such as a new sign or landscape element.  Certificate of Appropriateness Applications are for substantial changes.  They must go before the Design Review Committee and the Historic Landmarks Commission.  You should allow approximately one month to process them.  The Application Form contains a schedule of meetings of the Design Review Committee and the Historic Landmarks Commission.  If you have any questions regarding Certificates of Appropriateness, call the Historic Landmarks Commission office at (704) 376-9115.  Click on the green boxes below to see the application forms.
