The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Schools are proposing to make changes to the edge of Independence Park behind Elizabeth School.  The only portion of the changes which concern the Design Review Committee is those that are within the boundaries of the park.  Staff believes that the intended changes do meet the Secretary of the Interior Standards.
This is a layout of the school.  The photographs below are photographs one through four.
This photograph shows the edge of Independence Park looking toward the school.  Note the rock rubble retaining wall.  The School System is proposing to make this wall higher and place ornamental plantings along it.

This is another view of the edge of the park and the retaining wall.  The School System is also proposing to place a walkway and a handicapped access ramp in the vicinity of the retaining wall.

Compare this view of the rear of Elizabeth School from Independence Park with that presented in the drawing at the bottom of the page, which shows the same perspective.

This view shows the area where the retaining wall will be extended and a walkway will be installed.

Here is the site plan.  The parking lot for the school is at the top.
