AGENDA
1. Chairman’s Report:
Mr. Benson welcomed everyone to the meeting on behalf of Ms.
Hockett.
2. Consulting Director’s Report:
Dr. Morrill stated that two Applications for Certificates of
Appropriateness are coming before the Committee. They are:
1) Lucas House, which is currently used as a restaurant.
The owner is proposing to enclose the front porch. 2)
Morgan School. The lessee is proposing to renovate the
building as a charter school.
3. Applications for
Certificates of Appropriateness
A. Lucas House, 1601 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, N.
C.
Mr. Gray explained the plans for the renovation, and Mr.
Zanitsch described the need for the restaurant to add seating by
enclosing the porch.
MR. BOOKOUT PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY MR. ALSOP TO
RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION THAT THE
APPLICATION FOR A CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS FOR THE LUCAS
HOUSE, 1601 EAST SEVENTH STREET, CHARLOTTE, N. C., BE APPROVED
WITH THE PROVISION THAT THE APPLICANT SHALL WORK WITH STAFF TO
DETERMINE THE FINISHES AND APPOINTMENTS THAT WILL MAKE THE
MODIFICATIONS TO THE PORCH AS UNOBTRUSIVE AS FEASIBLE. THE
COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION.
B. Morgan School, 510 Torrence Street, Charlotte, N. C.
Mr. Gray explained the proposed alterations to the
building; and the applicant and his associates explained their
plans, including the proposed replacement of all windows in the
building. Dr. Morrill and Mr. Gray stated that the
original application had proposed replacing damaged elements of
the windows, not their total replacement.
MR. ALSOP PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY MR. BOOKOUT TO
RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION THAT THE
APPLICATION FOR A CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS FOR THE MORGAN
SCHOOL, 510 TORRENCE STREET, CHARLOTTE, N. C., BE APPROVED AS
PRESENTED WITH THE STIPULATION THAT THE APPLICANT WILL WORK WITH
STAFF TO INVESTIGATE THE FEASIBILITY OF REPAIRING, NOT
REPLACING, THE WINDOWS ON THE FRONT ELEVATION OF THE SCHOOL
BUILDING. THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION.
