AGENDA

1. Chairman’s Report: Mr. Benson

A welcome was extended to everyone present.

2. Director’s Report: Dr. Morrill

Dr. Morrill reminded everyone present that the HLC follows the Secretary of the Interior’s Guidelines in making design recommendations for historic properties.

3. Applications for a Certificate of Appropriateness: Mr. Gray

Note: Applications and proposed design plans are on file at the HLC office.

A. Revision of the Certificate of Appropriateness Application for the Wadsworth House (Garage), 400 S. Summit St., Charlotte, N. C.

Current proposed plans and elevations were presented to and reviewed by the Committee. Questions and concerns were addressed.

MR. SHURLEY PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY DR. MATTSON TO RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION THAT A REVISION FOR THE CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS (07-01) FOR THE WADSWORTH HOUSE PROPERTY (GARAGE), 400 S. SUMMIT ST., CHARLOTTE, N.C., BE APPROVED AS PRESENTED. THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION.

 

B. William Grier House and the Hayes-Byrum House Relocation, 8600 Steele Creek Rd., Charlotte, N. C.

The proposed Application for a Certificate of Approval requests that a new location for the structures be approved. The HLC had previously approved different locations for the moves. The Application was reviewed and discussed by those present.

DR. MATTSON PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY MR. ASBURY TO RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION THAT THE APPLICATION FOR A CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS FOR RELOCATIONS OF THE WILLIAM GRIER HOUSE AND THE HAYES-BYRUM HOUSE, 8600 STEELE CREEK ROAD, CHARLOTTE, N.C. BE APPROVED AS PRESENTED. THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION.

C. W. T. ALEXANDER HOUSE, Mallard Creek Church Rd., Charlotte, N. C.

The proposed Application for a Certificate of Approval requests that significant changes to the garage be approved. The Committee reviewed the proposed plans and agreed that the Application meets reversibility requirements.

DR. MATTSON PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY MR. ALSOP TO RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION THAT THE APPLICATION FOR A CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS FOR THE W. T. ALEXANDER HOUSE, MALLARD CREEK CHURCH ROAD, CHARLOTTE, N. C., BE APPROVED AS PRESENTED WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT THE EXTERIOR OF THE STAIR TOWER BE SIMPLIFIED AS AGREED UPON AND THAT THE DOOR LIGHTS BE APPROVED BY HLC STAFF AND THE DESIGN REVIEW COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN BEFORE INSTALLATION. THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION.

D. MAJOR ALEXANDER JAMES HOUSE, 260 Cherokee Rd., Charlotte, N. C.

The owners of the property , present at the meeting, are proposing to alter the existing one story wing on the west side of the house. The existing front elevation and a proposed front elevation were presented. Full plans for the proposed project were presented to and discussed by the Committee.

MR. SHURLEY PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY DR. MATTSON TO RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION THAT THE APPLICATION FOR A CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS FOR THE MAJOR ALEXANDER JAMES HOUSE, 260 CHEROKEE ROAD, CHARLOTTE, N.C., BE APPROVED AS PRESENTED. THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION.

4. Old Business

No old business was presented.

5. New Business

Mr. Benson told Committee members that the HLC is doing a survey of important "modern" buildings in Mecklenburg County. He asked those present to contact him or the HLC office if they have suggestions about properties they consider significant.
