The Robinson House.  The owner of the Robinson House has applied for a Certificate of Appropriateness to demolish the Robinson House on Steele Creek Road.  State Enabling Legislation requires that the Commission must issue the Certificate but can delay its effective date for up to 365 days.

The Robinson House is a significant remnant of Mecklenburg County's once extensive rural landscape.  However, it takes on even greater meaning when considered as part of a district of structures.  Indeed, in my judgment, this area is one of the two most important collections of rural structures and spaces remaining in Mecklenburg County, the other being the Croft area.  The area bounded by Dixie River Road and the new I-485 contains three historic landmarks -- the Byrum Store, the Byrum House, and the Robinson House.  There is also a distinctive bungalow-style house in the immediate area. Staff Recommendation.  That the Committee recommend that the Commission delay the effective date of the Certificate of Appropriateness for 365 days from the issuance date and that the Projects Committee give the most serious consideration to the feasibility of the Commission's purchasing the Robinson House and the Tax Parcel Number within which it sits, so that development can occur which would be sensitive to the rural character of the Robinson House and its surroundings.
