AGENDA

1. Chairman’s Report: Ms. Hockett

Ms. Hockett welcomed everyone to the meeting.

2. Director’s Report: Dr. Morrill

Dr. Morrill explained the business to be discussed this evening.

3. Consideration of an Application for a Certificate of Appropriateness to relocate the Dr. J. J. Rone House

Mr. and Mrs. Patterson and Mr. Moore were present in support of the Application for a Certificate of Appropriateness to move the house, currently located on Marvin Road.

The application is for a project that involves moving the house approximately 2,200 feet south of its present position to a new lot approximately 200 feet by 200 feet which borders Marvin Road. The 1886 house was originally located in Union County and was moved to Mecklenburg County in 1964. A good deal of grading will be done on the new site to accommodate the Rone House and the other new home sites.

The Committee members discussed the application, asked questions and addressed concerns. Mr. Gray showed photographs and a map of the proposed site and of the house on its current site.

MR. PARKER PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY MR. MISENHEIMER TO RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION THAT THE APPLICATION FOR A CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS FOR THE MOVE OF THE DR. J. J. RONE HOUSE BE APPROVED AS PRESENTED. THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION.

Note: The Sentiment of the Committee is that the entire back edge of the property should be screened with indigenous landscaping. Mr. Moore said that he will explore this matter and report to the Commission at its January meeting.

4. Discussion of HLC involvement in a prospective study of the former Charlotte Union Bus Terminal.

Dr. Morrill said that James A. Malcom was the architect of the 1941 Charlotte Union Bus Terminal. The building is the best local example of the Art Moderne style of architecture. It closed in 1987 as a bus terminal. The HLC has voted to have a Survey and Research prepared on the property. Dr. Morrill said that Mr. Gray will attend a meeting tomorrow afternoon with the Historic Districts Commission and Bank of America, the current owner, about future plans for the building. An intensive design workshop will probably be held in January. Ms. Hockett and Mr. Jeff Bradsher, HLC Chairman, will select HLC representatives for the committee.

5. Old Business

No motions were presented.

6. New Business

Mr. Bookout reported that he read in the paper that the old Courthouse on West Trade Street might be sold to obtain money for the new arena. Dr. Morrill said he would get more specific information. The building is not a designated historic landmark.

The meeting adjourned at approximately 6:50p.m.
