1.
Interviews for candidates for the Project Manager Position will
occur on July 21, 2000. I will be placing resumes on the website.
There are three candidates. The Commission should select two
people to participate with me in the interview process.
2.
Congratulations to the Commission for the Historic Preservation
Workshop held last month. Notebooks for all participants will be
available. I have one notebook for the office and will be happy to
make it available. Two things emerged from the Conference that
made a particular impression on me. One was that in design review
the Commission should seek to keep bad things from happening, not
seek to make good things happen. The other was that in the area of
design review, new additions should be clearly distinguishable
from historic fabric but can reflect the architecture of the
contemporary era, meaning that they do not have to be modern in
style.
3. Over
the next two weeks I will be working to process numerous
properties that are awaiting designation. The following properties
have been commented upon by the Division of Archives and History
and are awaiting the scheduling of joint public hearings with the
City Council: Textile Mill Supply Company, Nebel Knitting Mill
Annex. The following properties need to have comments made by the
North Carolina Division of Archives and History: Thies House,
Bland-McAden House, Neely Slave Cemetery, Charlotte Post Office,
John Milton Alexander House.
4. I am
still awaiting word regarding the fate of the Palmer Fire School.
I continue to believe that the Commission will be asked to
participate in a preservation solution for this property.
5. There
have been interesting developments regarding the Oehler Farm on
the Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road. I met with the owner and the
Mayor of Huntersville. The Town of Huntersville is most interested
in trying to preserve the property. I know that several developers
have approached the owner about purchasing the property. Pike
Jones's contract has expired, but he has a six months' right of
first refusal.
6. The
closing on the W. T. Alexander property has still not occurred.
Cambridge Properties and the buyer of the adjoining multi-family
tract are still working out the details of their closing. The
fundamental problem is that the buyer of the multi-family land
cannot discuss the issue of our access to the new road west of the
property until he or she closes. Patricia Nystrom has told me not
to have any work done on the property until we close.
7. The
contract with Percivals to sell the Croft Schoolhouse is in place.
