1.
The W. T. Alexander
rezoning decision will come before the Board of County Commissioners
on August 17, 1999. Attorney Patricia Nystrom is preparing the
contingency contract for consideration by the HLC. The W. T. Alexander
ad-hoc committee will review the document. I anticipate that a
contingency contract will come before the Commission at its meeting on
September 13th.
2. The joint public
hearing with the Board of Commissioners of the Town of Huntersville to
consider the designation of the Osborne House and the McElroy House as
historic landmarks shall occur on September 7, 1999. The hearing shall
occur in the Huntersville Town Hall during the meeting of the
Huntersville Board of Commissioners, which begins on 6 p.m.
3. The Board of County
Commissioners will meet on August 10th to determine the
amount of money to be included on the November 1999 Bond Referendum. I
will be there to attempt to answer any questions members of the Board
have with respect to the amount of money for the Historic Landmarks
Commission's Revolving Fund. I will keep you informed.
4. The Requests For Proposals for the
post-World War Two Survey were mailed to three prospective consultants
on August 2nd. Each has until September 1st to
respond and must be under contract by September 30th.
5. I will serve with County staff on a
special committee to consider a preservation strategy for the Palmer
Fire School. The committee will report to the Board of County
Commissioners in October.
6. The members of Jonesville A.M.E.
Zion Church are most likely going to request historic landmark
designation for the church property. Deborah Cox and I visited the
site and were impressed with its cultural importance.
7. The owner of the land on which the
Dinkins Cemetery is located is considering a request to use a portion
of the property to display earthmoving equipment. This request will be
considered by either the Design Review Committee or the Survey
Committee.
8. I did receive notification from
Preservation/North Carolina that the Historic Landmarks Commission
will receive a Preservation Award of Merit at the P/NC's annual
meeting in Charlotte and Gastonia. The Commission should select
someone to receive the award on the Commission's behalf.
9. Progress continues at the Croft
Schoolhouse. Tattie Bos and I visited the site on August 6th.
I will be visiting the property on August 17th with
Fitzhugh Stout to discuss the marketability of the property. I
anticipate that the building will be finished in December.
10. Grace A.M.E. Zion Church, a
designated historic landmark on South Brevard St., will be leaving the
center city. Grier Martin and I met with the minister, who is deeply
committed to the preservation of the building, to discuss the
situation. I will keep you informed.
11. The owner of the Frederick
Apartment on N. Church St. has contacted me about converting the
property into condominiums. It will be a certified rehabilitation. The
owner also requested a Potential Historic Landmark Form.
12. I am putting lots of new
information about the Historic Landmarks Commission on the website,
including minutes, Director's reports, a membership list, etc. I hope
you will take a look.
13. The materials have been submitted
to the City Clerk for scheduling the joint public hearing with the
Charlotte City Council to consider the designation of the McLaughlin
House as a historic landmark.
14. Classes for the small semester
begin on August 23rd. I will be teaching on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays. Consequently, you will be able to reach me
mainly on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My Introduction to Historic
Preservation Course will be televised on cable channel 22 on a delayed
