1.

The W. T. Alexander rezoning decision will come before the Board of County Commissioners on August 17, 1999. Attorney Patricia Nystrom is preparing the contingency contract for consideration by the HLC. The W. T. Alexander ad-hoc committee will review the document. I anticipate that a contingency contract will come before the Commission at its meeting on September 13th.

2. The joint public hearing with the Board of Commissioners of the Town of Huntersville to consider the designation of the Osborne House and the McElroy House as historic landmarks shall occur on September 7, 1999. The hearing shall occur in the Huntersville Town Hall during the meeting of the Huntersville Board of Commissioners, which begins on 6 p.m.

3. The Board of County Commissioners will meet on August 10th to determine the amount of money to be included on the November 1999 Bond Referendum. I will be there to attempt to answer any questions members of the Board have with respect to the amount of money for the Historic Landmarks Commission's Revolving Fund. I will keep you informed.

4. The Requests For Proposals for the post-World War Two Survey were mailed to three prospective consultants on August 2nd. Each has until September 1st to respond and must be under contract by September 30th.

5. I will serve with County staff on a special committee to consider a preservation strategy for the Palmer Fire School. The committee will report to the Board of County Commissioners in October.

6. The members of Jonesville A.M.E. Zion Church are most likely going to request historic landmark designation for the church property. Deborah Cox and I visited the site and were impressed with its cultural importance.

7. The owner of the land on which the Dinkins Cemetery is located is considering a request to use a portion of the property to display earthmoving equipment. This request will be considered by either the Design Review Committee or the Survey Committee.

8. I did receive notification from Preservation/North Carolina that the Historic Landmarks Commission will receive a Preservation Award of Merit at the P/NC's annual meeting in Charlotte and Gastonia. The Commission should select someone to receive the award on the Commission's behalf.

9. Progress continues at the Croft Schoolhouse. Tattie Bos and I visited the site on August 6th. I will be visiting the property on August 17th with Fitzhugh Stout to discuss the marketability of the property. I anticipate that the building will be finished in December.

10. Grace A.M.E. Zion Church, a designated historic landmark on South Brevard St., will be leaving the center city. Grier Martin and I met with the minister, who is deeply committed to the preservation of the building, to discuss the situation. I will keep you informed.

11. The owner of the Frederick Apartment on N. Church St. has contacted me about converting the property into condominiums. It will be a certified rehabilitation. The owner also requested a Potential Historic Landmark Form.

12. I am putting lots of new information about the Historic Landmarks Commission on the website, including minutes, Director's reports, a membership list, etc. I hope you will take a look.

13. The materials have been submitted to the City Clerk for scheduling the joint public hearing with the Charlotte City Council to consider the designation of the McLaughlin House as a historic landmark.

14. Classes for the small semester begin on August 23rd. I will be teaching on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Consequently, you will be able to reach me mainly on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
