Director's Report

December 8, 2003

1.  There are two public hearings scheduled for this month.  The first hearing will occur tomorrow night at Pineville (6PM) for the prospective designation of the Younts House.  The hearing for the prospective designation of the Lassiter House will occur on December 15th during the Charlotte City Council meeting that commences at 6 p.m.  The owners of both houses favor historic landmark designation.

2.  I will be developing the operational budget request for the HLC in early January and will review it with the HLC Treasurer.  A recommended budget will be brought to the HLC at its January meeting.

3.  Discussions continue regarding the Trolley Barn between Crescent Resources, Pappas Properties and the County.  County staff will present a recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners in open session on December 16th.

4.  Discussions continue with Bank Of America and the Historic Districts Commission with respect to the Charlotte Union Bus Terminal.  I plan to attend Wednesday's meeting of the Historic Districts Commission to learn what action that body might take with respect to this matter.

5.  Stewart Gray and I will be taking training on the County software so that we can begin uploading website material to the County server.

6.  I met today with Autumn Rierson, who is moving to Charlotte and will open a Southwestern Office of Preservation North Carolina in Shelby.  It was a most fruitful meeting, and we discussed how the two agencies might work together in the future.

7.  I did meet with representatives of the Arts community during the past month to discuss how parts of the Carolina Theater might be incorporated into an auditorium uptown.

8.  Stewart Gray and I met with the developer of the property at the corner of Sharon Road and Colony Road.  We discussed the preservation of the African American Cemetery on the property.  It was a most worthwhile meeting, and the developer will be working cooperatively with the Commission.

9.  An official of Douglas International Airport will be visiting the office on Thursday at 10AM to view the historic mural to see if it is suitable for display at the airport.

Respectfully submitted,
