Director's Report

February 14, 2000

1. Barry Miller and I met during the past month with Peter Pappas and Fred Bolt, who are negotiating with the owners of the Charlotte Cotton Mills. They are proposing that the Commission participate with them in the development of the property. I have every reason to believe that a specific proposal will be forthcoming in the near future.

2. I met with Dr. Tom Cox and Ron Altman of the Catawba Lands Conservancy to discuss how the County might proceed with the acquisition of land in the Gar Creek Basin. We will be meeting with Darryl Williams this Friday to discuss the same issue.

3. I have had several telephone conversations during the past month with individuals who are interested in preserving the Oehler House from insensitive development. I continue to attempt to meet with Pike Jones, the developer.

4. An issue has arisen with respect to the General William Lee Davidson marker at Beatties Ford Road and Highway 73. There is some fear that it might be demolished. I am discussing this matter with officials in Huntersville.

5. We have received two Applications for Certificates of Appropriateness that will come before the Design Review Committee next week. One is to relocate the Chairman Blake House in Davidson. The other is to tear down the historic storage building at the rear of the Parks Cramer Complex (Atherton Mills).

6. Marilyn Croteau and I have been spending a good deal of time on the prospective move of the McAuley House. The agreement has been signed whereby the house and outbuildings will be given to the Commission with the stipulation that they should be moved within a year. Marilyn has obtained a moving price from Crouch. We will continue to work on this issue.

7. Lee-Morgan, Inc. should be beginning work on the barn at the W. T. Alexander Plantation this week. Everything is proceeding nicely toward an April or May closing. I will appear before the Planning Committee of the Planning Commission to review this matter tomorrow.

8. The proposed expansion of the scope of the HLC's revolving fund to include properties in local historic districts will come before the Board of County Commissioners tomorrow night. Thanks to Barry Miller for making the presentation. I have to teach my Historic Preservation Class at UNCC.

9. The budget request for the Historic Landmarks Commission has been submitted to the Engineering and Building Standards Department. Money was included for the industrial/institutional survey, a major publication, and professional travel for Commissioners.

10. Two grant applications have been submitted to the Division of Archives and History -- one for the survey and one for the proposed historic preservation workshop.

11.  Allen Brooks is working hard on the sign for the office.  Hopefully, it will be up by the March meeting.

12.  Lee-Morgan is developing estimates for repairs to the Newell Rosenwald School.  This will be considered by the Projects Committee.

13.  The final walk through at the Croft Schoolhouse should occur in the very near future.  Let's hope we can sell it fast.

14. I met with the new owners of the North Carolina Medical College Building to discuss the Secretary of the Interior's Guidelines. The building is going to be turned into housing, and a major addition is proposed.

Respectfully submitted
