Director's Report
January 14, 2007
A. Action Items
1. On January 11th a Gala
was held to raise funds for Charlotte Trolley, Inc., which is now headed
by Ron Tober. Len Norman and I attended representing the Historic
Landmarks Commission. The cost per ticket was $100. Staff
hereby requests a motion reimbursing the cost of the two tickets --
$200.
2. Mattson-Alexander
Associates has submitted a bid of $5120 to prepare the National Register
nomination form for the Torrence Lytle School. Staff hereby
requests a motion approving the Commission's securing the above services
from Mattson Alexander Associates.
3. At least three
Commissioners and two Staff persons are attending the Preservation
workshop in Lincolnton on January 17-18. The registration fee has
not yet been set, but it should be minimal -- approximately $10 per
person. Staff hereby requests a motion approving reimbursement of
expenses for attending the Preservation workshop, including mileage and
meals.
B. Information Items
1. Staff has not received a
report from the City Attorney's Office with respect to how other
communities are handling the issue of demolition by neglect. Staff
will continue to maintain contact with appropriate officials.
2. A law firm has
purchased the John Price Carr House on McDowell St. in Charlotte.
Staff canceled the order it had submitted for an appraisal, and there
was no cost.

3. City Council did
approve the rezoning for the three properties in Dilworth pictured
below. This means that the structures will be destroyed. I
did contact David Furman, the developer, and offered to meet with him
before City Council took its action. The Dilworth Community
Development Association has notified the Commission that it will be
bringing recommendations regarding what properties it would like for the
Commission to consider purchasing in Dilworth. Staff anticipates
that these recommendations will be reviewed by the Projects Committee at
its next meeting.

4. Pat Nystrom is reviewing realtor
listing documents received from Lexie Longstreet by which she would serve as a buyer's and
seller's agent for the Commission for the commercial buildings in
Pineville. The initial realtor who was contacted never responded.

5. The owner of the house at 2001 Oaklawn, Ave.,
Charlotte, has contacted the Commission to determine whether the property is
eligible for historic landmark designation. The house was identified
in the African American Survey conducted by the Commission. The owner
is requesting that the Commission fund a Survey and Research Report.

6. The County conducted an evaluation of the
Commission and gave it the highest marks for effectiveness.
7. The annual budget process for the
Commission will begin in February. Staff would welcome any
suggestions for new budget items to request.
8. The final report on the Hyde
Park houses and other modernist structures should be finished by the end
of January.
Respectfully submitted,
Dan L. Morrill
