Director's Report

September 11, 2006

1.  A public hearing with the Town Board of Matthews is scheduled for September 25th to consider the prospective designation of the Massey Clark House as a historic landmark.

2.  A public hearing with the Town Board of Pineville is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., September 12th, to consider the prospective designation of the McCoy Barbershop/Pineville Post Office (Former) and the Yandell Hotel and Grocery Store Building as historic landmarks.

3.  A public hearing with the Charlotte City Council is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., October 18th, to consider the prospective designation of the portions of White Oak Plantation and the City House as historic landmarks.

4.  A public hearing with the Davidson Town Board is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., November 14th, to consider the prospective designation of four properties for designation as historic landmarks.

5.  The Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously on September 6, 2006, to recognize the funds necessary to purchase White Oak Plantation.  The closing should occur soon after October 18th, when City Council should vote to designate the remaining portions of the property as a historic landmark.  Len Norman made the presentation to the Board.  A special ad hoc White Oaks Committee will be working with staff on the details of this projects.  Structural, mechanical, and environmental inspections are scheduled.  Click here for photos of White Oak furniture.

6.  The unveiling ceremony for the historic marker for Plato Price School did occur on September 2nd.  Thanks to Valerie Lewis for her attendance.  Special thanks to Stewart Gray for coordinating the ordering and placement of the marker.

7.  Staff continues to perform work on Grace A.M.E. Zion Church.  Limited showings of the property continue.  A contractor will be repairing a leak in the roof, and another will be placing protective coverings on the windows. A contract has been signed for the parking spaces at the rear of the building.

8.  Work continues on the Grier-Rea House.  Complications have arisen regarding securing a Certificate of Occupancy.  Additional utilities work will have to be performed before the siding can be placed on the house.  If approved by the Commission, the Board of County Commissioners will be asked to recognize the necessary funds on October 3rd.  Bryan Turner will speak to this issue.

9.  The Board of County Commissioners voted on September 6th to recognize additional funds for the approved additional work on the Sidney and Ethel Grier House.  The contractor has been selected, and the work should begin this week.  The Commission might wish to consider landscaping improvements at the property.

10.  The Board of County Commissioners will be asked at its October 3rd meeting to recognize the funds necessary to purchase and begin repairs at the N. S. Alexander House. 

11.  Preservation North Carolina will have its annual convention in Wilmington, N.C. from October 5 through October 7. 

12.  Independent Mapping has signed its contract to purchase space in the Charlotte Cotton Mills.  The due diligence period runs until October 23rd, and the closing is scheduled for December 7th.

13.  The closing on the Oehler House is scheduled for December 20th.  The issue regarding the relocation of McAuley House must be resolved by that time.  Stewart Gray and Bryan Turner are working on this issue.

14.  Staff has met with various parties regarding the Commission's involvement with the prospective designation of the Coffee Cup Restaurant as a historic landmark.

15.  Historic Charlotte will host its annual preservation awards banquet at the Charlotte Cotton Mills on October 4th.  For additional information visit their website at historiccharlotte.com

16.  The County is suspending its use of the Torrence Lytle School in Huntersville, significant portions of which have been designated as a historic landmark.  Staff is pursuing the possibility of how this property might be transferred to the Historic Landmarks Commission for subsequent sale and development.  Bryan Turner can speak to this issue.
