Education Committee Meeting

August 29, 2005

Location: HLC office, 2100 Randolph Road, Charlotte, N. C.

Time: 6:00 p.m. - 6:40 p.m.

AGENDA

Ms. Lewis welcomed everyone to the meeting.

1. Bus Tour

A general discussion of the bus tour scheduled for Sunday, December 4, 2005, 1:30 p.m. (bus will leave from HLC office) ensued. 

MR. NEWMAN PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY MR. SULLIVAN TO RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION THAT UP TO $500.00 BE AUTHORIZED TO RENT A BUS FOR AN EDUCATIONAL TOUR OF THE HISTORIC LANDMARK COMMISSION’S PROJECTS.  THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION.

2. Presentation To The Board of County Commission

Mr. Sullivan explained the benefits to be derived from making a formal presentation to the Board of County Commissioners on the work of the HLC.  It was agreed that a good time for a presentation to the Board would be their second meeting in November. Dr. Morrill stated that he would initiate contacts with the County staff about arranging the presentation. Ms. Lewis will coordinate the content of the presentation.

3. Resolution Honoring Jack Boyte

Dr. Morrill explained that the County would be able to approve a resolution at its September 20th meeting honoring Jack Boyte. Dr. Morrill will be submitting a draft to the County staff, and he will coordinate this presentation with Ms. Lewis and the members of the Committee.

Old Business

Dr. Morrill explained the effectiveness of the HLC’s website.

Mr. Sullivan discussed the issue of the historic mural of Charlotte-Mecklenburg history. He asked the Committee members to suggest possible sites for the art.

Ms. Blackburn asked about the status of the GIS Mapping of historic landmarks. Dr. Morrill reported that the Committee has submitted the necessary information to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission,
