1. Chairman's Report: Mr. Misenheimer
Mr. Misenheimer welcomed everyone to the meeting. He showed the Committee
old photographs and glass slides from his family that he is willing to share
with the HLC for the INTERNET journal.
2. Consulting Director's Report: Dr. Morrill
Dr. Morrill encouraged everyone to keep up with the HLC's activities on
the website. The site has had over one-half million hits.
3. Davidson Schoolhouse at Rural Hill
Dr. Morrill reported that Mr. Bryan Turner, HLC Projects Manager, and Mr.
Allen Brooks, Architect, are working on plans for the bathroom facility for
the Davidson Schoolhouse. Mr. Turner will present the Projects Committee and
HLC with a contract in the near future. School children cannot visit the
property until the construction of the building is completed with the
$45,000 money received from the Knight Foundation grant. Design plans must
be reviewed by the HLC's Design Review Committee and approved by the HLC
before work can begin.
4. INTERNET Journal
Dr. Paula Stathakis continues working at the W. T. Alexander House on the
INTERNET Journal for the HLC. Dr. Stathakis has received one manuscript to
date and is lining up others. Dr. Morrill said that the photograph essay
such as the one made possible with Mr. Misenheimer's photographs will be a
great addition. He thanked Mr. Misenheimer for this valuable contribution.
Dr. Morrill said that historic preservation must always be history-based.
5. Sign for Old Good Samaritan Hospital
Dr. Morrill reported that the sign is here and is being stored at a
Mecklenburg County facility. He said that when work is received from the
City about an appropriate location for the sign he will notify everyone.
6. Old Business
Dr. Morrill reported that WTVI is still interested in producing
one-minute historic neighborhood spots between regularly scheduled
television programs. WTVI told Dr. Morrill that he will be contacted by the
station when a filming date is set.
Dr. Morrill reported that the African-American Survey for Mecklenburg
County should be ready in September 2002.
7. New Business
Ms. Brickey said that everyone is invited to the "Dowd House Block Party"
which will be held April 6, 2002, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. She said that the
Dowd House, 2216 Monument Street, will be open for tours, and that bands,
balloons, entertainment and food will be part of the festivities. She said
that the Public Library, Mecklenburg Historical Association, and the Dowd
House Board are sponsoring the event.
Dr. Morrill said that the HLC would benefit greatly from having a power
point projector to enhance the Commission's work.
