The Restoration of Streetcar 85

On June 15, 1983, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Historic Properties Commission, now the Historic Landmarks Commission, voted to send its Consulting Director, Dr. Dan L. Morrill, to investigate vintage trolley operations in Philadelphia, Boston, Detroit, and Chattanooga.  This was the initial step in what would become a decades-long effort to return streetcar service to Charlotte.  A major part of the campaign was the restoration of Streetcar 85, which was built in Charlotte in 1927, retired from service in 1938, found in Huntersville in 1987, restored and put back on line, although on a limited basis, in 1992.
