Education Committee Meeting
September 16, 2002

Ms. Richardson called the meeting to order and thanked
all the members who were present.
MR. SULLIVAN MADE AND MR. MISENHEIMER SECONDED A MOTION
APPROVING THE MINUTES FOR THE AUGUST MEETING OF THE EDUCATION COMMITTEE. THE
MOTION WAS APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY.
Good Samaritan Marker Ceremony
Ms. Richardson stated that she had talked with B. J. Waymer of the
Carolina Panthers. She also suggested that a date and time should be
selected. The Committee considered several options. The consensus was that
Ms. Richardson will check with the Panthers about an appropriate date in
October.
Charlotte Cotton Mills Event Sponsored by Historic
Charlotte
Dr. Morrill reported that Tattie Bos had spoken with him on the telephone
today and that she was interested in having an informational display at the
event. She said that Amy Hockett would be assisting Tattie with this
project.
Informational Sessions With Local Governing Boards
Mike Sullivan reported that he and Ms. Richardson were
assembling the names of public officials in order to establish community
relations. He also reported about possible assistance with the payment of
the costs associated with the relocation of the Grier-Rea House. Bryan
Turner, HLC Projects Manager, is putting some numbers together. This
information could be also useful for future projects.
Palmer Fire School Publicity
It was agreed that when a contract for purchase is
approved by the HLC Ms. Hockett will be contacting the buyer about publicity
potentials.
Rural Hill Schoolhouse
Mr. Misenheimer reported that he had talked with Allen
Brooks, who anticipates that the Auxiliary Building will not be completed
until April or May of next year. Mr. Misenheimer had also attempted to make
contact with Becky Finger, Social Studies Coordinator for the Public
Schools. When he makes contact, Mr. Misenheimer will arrange a meeting with
HLC staff and selected members of the Committee.
African American Survey
Ms. Richardson stated that a chairperson is still needed
to oversee this project. Ms. Johnson-Gess said that she would serve as
chairperson.
National Historic Preservation Week
Ms. Richardson stated that the Committee will focus on
this at a later meeting.
New Business
Mike Sullivan stated that he would invite Marc Silverman,
who has a lot of interest in historic preservation, to a future meeting.
Mike Sullivan stated that it would be interesting to have
a Holiday Party for the Commission. The Committee discussed the idea, and it
was determined that Mike Sullivan would consider what might be appropriate.
Old Business
Mr. Misenheimer reminded the Commission that the
Declaration of Independence Ceremony will begin at the Charlotte Museum of
History on September 25th. Ms. Richardson stated that she would
contact the Museum.
The Committee established its next meeting date on
November 7th at 6:00PM.
The meeting adjourned at 6:16PM.
