AGENDA

1. Welcome: John Misenheimer

Mr. Misenheimer welcomed everyone to the meeting.

2. Updates: Dan Morrill, HLC Consulting Director

Dr. Morrill reported that the HLC’s website has had over 200,000 hits.

3. Publicity for Post World War II Survey

Dr. Morrill reported that the survey of buildings constructed between 1945 and 1965 in Charlotte-Mecklenburg has been completed and that publicity for the project is needed. Dr. Morrill explained that David E. Gall Architectural Firm would provide a diskette so that the information can be placed on the website. He stated that he would discuss what additionally was needed once he had an opportunity to review the material that will be on the website. He said that all of the original materials, including the photographs, go to the N. C. Division of Archives and History. He said that it would be helpful if committee members could assist in photographing the many properties in the report recommended for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

4. Ideas for Website - www.cmhpf.org

Dr. Morrill stated that he and Mr. Misenheimer met recently to discuss how the Education Committee might assist in establishing an INTERNET journal on local history directly related to the work of the Historic Landmarks Commission. After a general discussion, it was agreed that Dr. Morrill will work with Ms. Kute and Mr. Martin to investigate the possibility of establishing such a journal and report back to the committee.

A change of the website’s address was discussed.

5. Status Report on Rural Hill Schoolhouse

Mr. Misenheimer stated that Historic Charlotte, Inc. has reportedly offered to return the Knight Foundation money ($45,000) for the construction of a welcome center/bathroom facility for the Rural Hill Schoolhouse (Davidson Schoolhouse) unless the money is accepted by the Park and Recreation Department of Mecklenburg County. The Committee instructed Dr. Morrill to inform Mr. Tony Pressley, president of Historic Charlotte, that it hopes that the money is not returned and that, if necessary, the Historic Landmarks Commission will assume a leadership position in completing the project. Dr. Morrill said that he will converse with Mr. Wayne Weston, the director of Park and Recreation, about the matter.

6. Old Business

No motions were presented.

7. New Business

Ms. Morrill distributed a draft "write-up" on the current state of the Historic Landmarks Commission for distribution at the meeting of the Mecklenburg Historical Association October 23rd. She asked each Committee member present to correct errors. A final copy is attached.
