Re:  Archives and History Comments on the prospective designation of the Armour Adams House

As mandated by State Law, the Division of Archives and History has commented upon the prospective designation of the Armour-Adams House as a historic landmark.  Despite being tardy, the comment has been received and suggests that several questions need to be addressed before the demonstration of special significance can be validated.  It is the purpose of this document to attempt to answer these questions and thereby validate the claim for special significance.

1.  The comment states that the Survey and Research Report does not contain a tax map.  A tax map will be added to the report.

2.  The comment states that the property does not have a description of the interior historic features of the house.  The designation will only be for the exterior of the house.  Consequently, no interior description is required.

3.  The comment states that the report does not adequately separate the Armour Adams House from other houses of its type in Davidson.  Staff believes that the Armour Adams House does have special significance as the best local expression of the Queen Anne type cottage that was favored by merchants and Davidson College faculty at the turn of the last century.  The house also has a higher degree of physical integrity than most other houses of its type in Davidson.

4.  The comment asks for clarification of the number of years Margaret Adams taught school in Davidson.  The report states that she taught "generations" of students.
