Re: Archives and History Comments on the Prospective Designation of
Holt-Henderson-Copeland House as a historic landmark.
As mandated by State Law, the Division of Archives and History has
commented upon the prospective designation of the Holt-Henderson-Copeland
House as a historic
landmark. Despite being tardy, the comment has been received and
suggests that several questions need to be addressed before the
demonstration of special significance can be validated. It is the
purpose of this document to attempt to answer these questions and thereby
validate the claim for special significance.
1. The comment states that the most appropriate historic name for
the house should be the "Holt-Henderson-Copeland House." The name has
been changed in the report accordingly.
2. The comment states that the use of "Folk Victorian" to describe
the house is too general a term. The report has been revised to use
the term "Italianate."
3. The comment asks whether any outbuildings survive,
including Dr. Holt's original office. A specific statement has been
inserted into the report stating that there are no extant outbuildings.
4. The comment asks for a description of the lot. A brief
description of the lot has been inserted into the report.
5. The comment questions the source for the assertion that the
Holt-Henderson-Copeland House encases an earlier structure. Physical
inspection of the house reveals that an earlier structure is encased
therein.
6. The comment asks for more specific information about the
physical components of the house, such as the nature of the siding. Staff
has visited the site and affirms that the information in the report is
correct.
