Study Of Potential Impact On
Elmwood/Pinewood Cemetery Of
Expanded Railroad Corridor
I. Statement of Purpose.
The City of Charlotte has requested that a 100-foot corridor on the
eastern edge of the subject property be excluded from the proposed
landmark, so that a railroad right-of-way might be constructed west of the
current railroad right-of-way. This report describes the historic
character of the corridor, assesses its cultural significance, and
determines what impact the expansion of the railroad right-of-way would
have upon the corridor.
II. Description of Corridor.
The corridor is a rolling grassy strip that extends northward from 6th St.
to Ninth St. It contains one building, a gable-roofed brick building
which once served as the office for the cemetery. Otherwise the site
is characterized by family burial plots in Elmwood Cemetery and the random
distribution of graves, many unmarked in Pinewood Cemetery.

One solution is for the City to
acquire the property across Ninth St. and proceed with moving the graves
to this site. |
III.
Assessment of Impact. It is obvious that the impact of the
expansion of the railroad right-of-way would have a negative impact upon the
historic character of the 100-foot corridor and its historic content.
