MOTIONS

1. MR. MATTSON PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY MR. BENSON TO RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION THAT MR. STEWART GRAY BE PAID A STIPEND OF $1500 FOR A SURVEY OF EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY REVIVAL STYLE LOG BUILDINGS IN MECKLENBURG COUNTY UPON SATISFACTORY COMPLETION OF THE SURVEY AND ITS APPROVAL BY THE CONSULTING DIRECTOR.  THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION.

Note: If the motion is approved, the stipend will come from the 2005-2006 operational budget.  Mr. Gray would perform this survey as part of his academic requirements at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  The survey will constitute a significant addition to the HLC’s comprehensive database of historic resources.

2. DR. MATTSON PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY MR. BENSON TO RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION  THAT IT CONTINUE TO SUSPEND THE HISTORIC DESIGNATION PROCESS FOR THE SOUTHERN PUBLIC UTILITIES STREETCAR BARN UNTIL A PRESERVATION SOLUTION CAN BE DEVISED OR UNTIL SUCH TIME AS NO VIABLE PRESERVATION SOLUTION SEEMS TO BE FORTHCOMING.  THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION.

Note: In September 2001, the HLC voted to process this property for designation as a historic landmark but did not move ahead with the designation process until a preservation solution could be devised.  In January 2002 the HLC voted to request that the Board of County Commissioners use land bond money to purchase the building.  In March 2004 the BOCC voted to spend the money with the expectation that CATS would acquire the property by July 1, 2005, and restore the building.  CATS has now determined that it does not intend to move ahead with the restoration of the building, and Crescent Resources will have the right o purchase the property from the County.  The intentions of Crescent regarding the preservation of the building are not known.

3. MR. BENSON PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY MR. MATTSON TO RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION THAT THE  HOUSE AT 314 EASTOVER ROAD, CHARLOTTE, N. C., BE PLACED ON THE HLC’S STUDY LIST.  THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION.
