 Item #2 - Director’s Report: Dr. Dan Morrill.

A. Request from owner of W. B. Newell House, 8410 Old Concord Rd.

The owners of the W. B. Newell House on Old Concord Rd. have submitted a letter (copy distributed to Committee members) requesting that the designation of the property be removed.

 MR. WEIS PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY MR. GRAY TO RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION TO OPPOSE DE-DESIGNATING THE W. B. NEWELL HOUSE, 8410 OLD CONCORD ROAD, CHARLOTTE, N.C. AND NOT TO FORMULATE A RECOMMENDATION TO THE CHARLOTTE CITY COUNCIL.   THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION.

 MR. NEWMAN PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY MR. WEIS TO RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION TO DIRECT THE HLC’S PROJECTS COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE PURCHASING THE W. B. NEWLL HOUSE, 8410 OLD CONCORD ROAD, CHARLOTTE, N. C.  THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION.

 Item #3 - Consideration of Survey and Research Reports

     A.  Garinger High School.  1100 Eastway Drive, Charlotte, N.C.

 Dr. Morrill and Mr. Gray reviewed the history of the property and set forth justifications for the property possessing special historic significance.  Dr. Morrill stated that the North Carolina Division of Archives and History has sent a letter supporting the designation of the property. 

 Ms. Vicki Saville of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Schools explained that there are many needs that one must address in determining the upkeep and design of buildings. 

 MR. NEWMAN PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY MR. ALSOP TO RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION THAT ALL PORTIONS OF THE PROPERTY IDENTIFIED AS INDIVIDUALLY SIGNIFICANT IN THE SURVEY AND RESEARCH REPORT ON GARINGER HIGH SCHOOL BE PROCESSED FOR HISTORIC LANDMARK DESIGNATION.  THE MOTION PASSED WITH THE VOTE:  FOR:  ALSOP, NEWMAN.  OPPOSED:  WEIS.

      B.  Charles H. and Bess Smith House.  220 West Tenth St., Charlotte, N.C.

 Dr. Morrill and Mr. Gray reviewed the history of the property and set forth justifications for the property possessing special historic and architectural significance.  Dr. Morrill stated that the North Carolina Division of Archives and History has sent a letter supporting the designation of the property.

 MR. WEIS PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY MR. NEWMAN TO RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION THAT THE EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDINGS AND THE GROUNDS AT THE CHARLES H. AND BESS SMITH HOUSE, 220 WEST TENTH ST., CHARLOTTE, N.C.,  BE PROCESSED FOR HISTORIC LANDMARK DESIGNATION. THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION. 

Item#4- Consideration of Potential Historic Landmarks

 A.  Lingle Hut, 219 Watson Street, Davidson, N.C.

 MR. NEWMAN PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY MR. WEIS TO RECOMMEND TO THE HISTORIC LANDMARKS COMMISSION THAT  IT FUND A SURVEY AND RESEARCH REPORT ON THE LINGLE HUT, 219 WATSON ST., DAVIDSON, N.C.  THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION.

B.  William R. Barringer Hotel,  426 North Tryon Street, Charlotte, N.C.

 Dr. Morrill briefly reviewed the historical background of the property, which is part of the HLC’s Center City Survey. The Committee considered whether it wanted to recommend to the Historic Landmarks Commission that it fund a Survey and Research Report on  the former William R. Barringer Hotel, 426 North Tryon St., Charlotte, N.C.  The 12-story building opened on December 15, 1940.  The Committee discussed the property and agreed to take no action.

Item#5-Consideration of Properties for Placement on the Study List.

 A.  McCausland Building, 221 South Tryon Street, Charlotte, N.C.

 Mr. Jim Donnelly, owner of the McCausland Building, stated his support for historic landmark designation of the property.  Ms. Alexander, Preservation Consultant, stated her support for designation. 

 MR. WEIS PRESENTED A MOTION SECONDED BY MR. NEWMAN THAT THE McCAUSLAND BUILDING, 221 SOUTH TRYON STREET, CHARLOTTE, N.C., BE PLACED ON THE HLC’S STUDY LIST OF PROSPECTIVE HISTORIC LANDMARKS.  THE COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED THE MOTION.

 There was no old business.  There was no new business.

 The meeting adjourned at 9:20am.
