SYMBOLS:
The hornet is Mecklenburg's oldest historic symbol. Banastre Tarleton, a notorious commander of British dragoons, commented to Lord Cornwallis when they encountered the feisty Scots-Irish of Mecklenburg in 1780 that they had entered a "Hornets' Nest." Until the 1880's, the nickname of Charlotte was the "Hornets' Nest." That's when local boosters like D. A. Tompkins changed it to the "Queen City."
Charlotte of Mecklenburg was the wife of King George III when Charlotte was established in 1768. The Colonial Assembly named the new community "Charlotte" in the reigning Queen's honor and named the county after her German homeland.
