Standard Oil
Company Service Station. UTM: 17
514258E 3898018N Standing immediately north
of the CSX Railroad tracks is the Standard Oil Company Service Station.
Its tile-hipped roof supported by a single column place the building in
the Bungalow style. It was constructed sometime before 1926 and
signaled the rise of the automobile as a major mode of transportation
into and out of Center City Charlotte. The only other gasoline
station of this era stands on North Graham St. just north of the CSX
tracks and is most likely threatened with demolition in the near future.
Buildings such as the Standard Oil Company Service Station are becoming
increasingly rare in large urban centers throughout the United States.
