514751E 3898397N Erected in 1940-41, the
Charlotte Union Bus Terminal is the best local example of the Art
Moderne style of architecture. It was designed by Charlotte
architect James A. Malcolm for the Queen City Coach Company and served
all intercity buses until 1973 and served Trailways Buses until the
terminal closed in 1987. Intercity buses provided "transportation
for the masses" in the mid-20th century and were vital to the economic
development of Charlotte and its environs.
