South 21
Drive-In No. 1
3631 South Boulevard
Charlotte, Mecklenburg
c. 1955
This is a flat roof restaurant building with ribbon windows and
enameled panels. A large, flat canopy extends on both sides and across the
front of the building to shelter curbside service areas for cars.
Individual menus, speakers, and trays are located at each space.
The original sign is located near the street. There are also
several billboard type signs along the rear fence line of the property.
The canopy and sign are trimmed with flashing lights and neon. Although
a second South 21 restaurant survives on Independence Blvd., this example
was surveyed because it was the first of the local chain and maintains a
good level of integrity.
